FFA & 4-H MEMBERS
BASIC PEN FACILITIES
PEN or FENCE :
4" x 4" woven wire fence or 4" x 4" livestock panels are the most desirable
Chain-link fence is also great, but more expensive.
Pens with 6 " squares might allow goats to get their head caught.
Remember you are also trying to keep unwanted animals out as well as keeping the goats in.
Fences or panels should be about 4 ft. tall. (goats are pretty good jumpers)
SHELTER:
Some type of shelter is a must.
Goats can become sick easily from cold rain.
Needs to be large enough for them to stand under. (remember they will get bigger than they are when purchased)
A three sided shelter with a roof should be sufficient.
FEEDERS:
Store bought or home made is OK.
Need to clean out before each feeding.
Mount them off the ground and about shoulder level.
Making them something to have to put their front feet up on while feeding is a good idea. (builds muscle while feeding)
Hay rack of some sort. (need to feed hay up off the ground)
WATERER:
Can be a bucket or auto waterer
Needs to be in the shade to keep cool
Needs to be kept clean and fresh (check daily)
OTHER ITEMS TO CONSIDER HAVING ON HAND OR ACCESS TO:
Trimming stand ( to trim hooves and to shear fur)
Scales ( to keep track of weight)
Brushes ( to keep coats clean )
Hoof trimmers, electric clippers, drench gun
You will also need or have access to some sort of carrier or trailer to get them to the Fairgrounds.
